The Weeraman Walawa

Heritage Property For Sale

The Weeraman Walawa (Aristocratic Mansion) is located on Sri Lanka's exotic south coast, which is quietly becoming the latest riviera of choice for the world's most discerning and inquisitive travelers.

Colonial Splendor on Sri Lanka's Exotic South Coast

The building, a 10,000 sq/ft recently fully-restored 19th-century Dutch Walawa, lies two miles north of Weligama bay and its sandy beaches. Surrounded by coconut groves on its southern flank, the Weeraman is a two storey building reminiscent of a French Chateau.

In typical Kandyan Style, the building is centered upon an internal courtyard. A hallway of polished cement runs along a veranda looping around three sides of the courtyard.

The entrance to the living room is particularly impressive, the doorway surmounted by an elaborate arch.

The Property

The front veranda and the courtyard are broad sweeping affairs, bracketed by wooded doorways and majestic carved pillars furnished with colonial antiquities and plants.

The ground floor has two large elegantly decorated dining/sitting rooms.

A chequered-floored, well-equipped kitchen and expansive dining room occupy the ground floor on the east side of the courtyard. Elegant lights of metallic black, designed by Sri Lanka's famous artist Saskia Pringers, are suspended above a robust polished-cement formal dining table, with seating for 16 persons.

To the right, a cantilevered staircase rises to three rooms on the upper floor.

The courtyard veranda also provides the entrance to 4 of the 6 bedrooms of the property.
